You’re about to learn crafts using the best mix of
seeing and
doing craft instruction that I know..
If you’ve ever wanted to finish each and every
instruction
sheet you’ve read and ended up wondering what on earth they’ve missed
out - then this Step by Step Craft Course could be the quickest and
easiest way you have ever found to learn crafts.
Because I am going to show you “failsafe”
craft projects that’ll guarantee success at the finish line.
You'll get a Weekly Craft Project with both
Video how to
and text each and every week that will show you up close and personal
over-my-shoulder shots of how to do each and every action, ever step of
the way. So you can't go wrong.
No way, no how. Because I've put all the
how-to's in!
But before I do that, let me tell you a story of how
I was
able to put together this magic approach to craft instructions.
"How a Part Time Craft
Teacher
Responds to a
Day Care Plea and Creates a Winning 1-2-3 Craft Instruction
Formula!"
I
used to teach craft part time, and one of my roles was working with
those with Brain Injuries in a Day Centre in the UK. Many had physical
photo difficulties others had mental health issues.
I was engaged to teach on a Certified Practical Craft Course delivering
around 20 sessions for one morning a week. Most students came
regularly, some only when they were able, but we all came together
because
We Shared a Love of
Crafting Together
I soon came to know their interests, strengths and
difficulties.
They loved what I did with them in class (Glass
Painting,
Metal Embossing, Fabric Crafts etc) but the time soon came when my
contract ended. Sadly we all knew that they had no way of carrying on
what I had started. So when I left The Centre Manager asked me to think
about how I could continue to share what I knew about crafting.
The problem was, with so many volunteers coming to
run
sessions, I couldn’t guarantee that the people they would get to run
sessions would be interested in crafts – let alone experienced
crafters.
Even if I left a rough idea of what to do, I was concerned that the
groups might not be led to learn the right thing in the right order,
the right way. The last thing I wanted was to leave everyone high and
dry without a chance of carrying on the enthusiasm for crafts that I
had started.
Realising That They Needed
Specific
Things
Written Down …
I Decided To Do Something About It!
And that was to write down all the things I had been
teaching
in class so that anyone who came to the centre could follow them and
get fantastic, repeatable results.
I was determined that they would no longer be
dependent on the
'quality' of the volunteer, or the availability of dodgy dog-eared
craft books kept in dusty bookshelves out the back.
They had all spent long enough being 'dependent' on
others! I
wanted to be able to free them to work independently. To give them back
some self-management, decision making and freedom.
So I applied my many years of teaching crafts to
what I knew
about craft instructions. Writing things down, my way, with clear steps, as simple as a 1-2-3. Steps
that they couldn't get confused with, and which could, I hoped, give
them a never-ending range of craft projects that they could follow
without me.
They would be craft instructions that they could
re-read when
they wanted, start and finish when they wanted.
Instructions they could use any time
of day
and night with a guaranteed level of success.
I
saw them self-directing each
and every project that I wrote for themselves, at their pace, in their
time. For those with disabilities, particularly, this was a
life-changing leap because now they could decide when they wanted to do
crafts and were not obliged to go to class only when someone was 'in
session'.
The freedom it gave them was astounding and I'm
proud to say
it was the first time my Manager at my County Adult Education Centre
had ever received a letter of commendation from
one of her placements.

“I gave my mum the soap Fancie for her 60th birthday. She said ‘I can’t
imagine Lisa making one of these. It looks as if it takes so long’.
They think I’m really clever now. You’ve
proved to
me I can…”
Lisa Culling, Family First,

They called me a ‘facilitator’, but honestly all I had done was to help
them to be independent in their creative activities.
But “It’s brilliant” they said. “Keep
writing”. So I
did.
And that was the beginning of writing even more step-by-step craft projects that anyone could
follow.
I could actually guarantee that anyone reading and
following
them – all things being equal, would come to a successful end. The
quality of that result, of course, was naturally dependent on the
individual’s ability but still
I Could Be Sure That Everyone
Following My
Formula would Be Successful
No
more giving up part way
through because they didn't understand it.
No more "Where am I,
what next?
No more "well that's not
what you said last time"…
Because it was all there in black and white (+ a
colour photo
for starters).
In many ways our crafting sessions together hadn't
ended at
all - they were only just starting!
Things, I'm glad to say blossomed at that Centre.
New staff
came and went.
New Centre users joined and left but one thing was constant.
The series of instructions that I had left them were
used and
re-used many times. And I think it's fair to say that the OCN Practical
Crafts Course that I ran gained 100% pass rate
- and that's not an easy thing to achieve when you've individuals who
can't speak, write or communicate through what you and I might call the
'normal' channels.
It Was So Successful That I Decided
To Share
My Style Of Craft Instructions With Everyone
That's right! I decided to apply this never-fail
1-2-3 style
of craft instructions to every craft project I tried from then on. I
tried them out on my local craft groups through Community Education.
And I had a pretty big trial group to test it on.
The great news is that you now get to see what it is
that I
learned from the Centre and what I learned that many
Publishers miss out.
After all, you need to know it's
never you who can't do it - if you're struggling with your
latest or past craft instructions. And here's where the responsibility
lies:

“You get a quick result and are achieving something. They look very
professional”.

As a teacher I truly believe that it’s my
responsibility to get my learners to understand and follow my
words. It' s important when I'm face to face with them, but when I'm
not
there, in the flesh and can only speak through the page, then it's even
more crucial.
So I take my role as a Craft Writer seriously. And
as a
teacher with over 20 years of teaching in Day
Care, Schools, and Community Education I've learnt a few things
along the way about how we learn. So you're getting the best advice on
what to look out for as you follow along with your craft projects.
So here's where we come to my failproof way of
learning crafts.
Craft Videos and
craft instructions
Most Craft Videos may be very glamourous, but they
don't show you
EXACTLY what you need to.
You may be left unsure, confused. Maybe you just couldn't see
what needed to be done because things weren't clear, or carefully
explained.
Well, my series of close up shots leave no room for guesses.
You're there, right by my shoulder as I go through each and every step
you need to follow.
I do it. Then you.
You can rewind, pause, fast forward. Whatever you like, when you
like.
And if you need to read the instructions to back up what you see, then
you've got that too.
So you're covered.
Here's what you get with the Instructions ...
